Hands Up Holidays, a company that promotes trips with a volunteer-based element has put together a solo travelers excursion to New Orleans where participants can enjoy some down time in the French Quarter, help Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans by boosting tourism AND donate some of their time to containing the effects of the recent BP oil spill.

Known as voluntourism, these types of trips include a little fun and a little giving back. Personally we think it’s a perfect combo for the socially conscious dating diva. And you never know what kind of charitable match you could meet while vacationing and giving back.

In addition to a stay in a 4-star hotel and a tour of the Garden District, singles involved in this special oil spill recovery trip may find themselves:

• Constructing oil spill containment booms that will help to minimize the damage done by the spill by soaking up oil and stopping the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico from spreading. Booms can be made from everyday materials like hair, animal fur, and pantyhose/nylons (so if you have allergies to pet hair and/or dander it is best to avoid this project).
• Helping applicants affected by the disaster (such as fishermen who do not have a source of income due to the ban on fishing) with filling out paperwork.
• Sorting and packing food that will be sent out to communities affected by the oil spill.

And on top of your time, a $100 monetary donation is included in your trip price to help people affected by this disaster.
