School Supplies Turn Me On!

It happens every year. All of a sudden the packs of pens, crisp folders, reams of paper, mechanical pencils, Scotch tapes, erasers and so on appear in stores. And I get giddy. Giddy in the same way that a new romance might make you giddy. Seriously.

I have laughed about this tendency for a while, but this year as I started to get all hot and bothered by the arrival of back-to-school hardware in CVS and Duane Reade (and forced myself to put down the multipack of Sharpies that I KNEW I did not need but wanted because they had new colors), I started to think about why I have this annual reaction. I mean, I feel it to a degree when I walk into a Staples or Office Depot at other times of the year, but never to the extent that it hits me when it’s September and all the stores are hocking their educational wares.

And that’s when I realized it’s not even just the three-rings that are getting me excited (though I do love an unmarred notebook), but it’s the concept of new possibilities. It’s the blank slate part of it all that makes me think, just like a new school year, that maybe something special is right around the bend…or the binder.

It’s also the idea that things are fresh and new. I find myself making lists this time of year, organizing my life, imagining what potentially might happen now that the summer slow-down is coming to a halt and we’re all drop-kicked back into time-to-move-forward mode. Sort of like making resolutions but without the New Year’s Eve guilt.

And it’s the idea that your crush might be sitting next to you in third hour (okay, we’ll substitute Starbucks for the schoolyard here). But there is the potential that as the air chills, you’ll find yourself holding someone’s hand…and then you can doodle endless amounts of hearts in your new and perfect notebook (either that, or see what your name might look like hyphenated with HIS last name). Or you can write your number on his palm with your new Precise V5 RT Pilot fine point pen.

Or perhaps he’ll even carry your books home for you…you never know.

If you need me, I’ll be in aisle four….
