A wise television personality once said, “If you can’t love yourself, how are you gonna love somebody else?” And it’s true. Nothing hinders personal growth in life and relationships more than when you can’t push aside negative feelings about yourself. They are a roadblock that hinders a person’s path to love and happiness beyond the borders of themselves.

Anyone looking for a partner should recognize that people pick up on ‘vibe’ – if you are emanating self-loathing, then you’re going to be less attractive to the opposite sex.  On the flip side, however, if you truly recognize your worth and love who you are, men are going to want to be around that if for no other reason that being around you makes THEM feel good.

After years of finding fault with yourself, however, it may sound easier said than done to begin to love yourself. True, it is not an overnight process. You won’t wake up one morning and say to yourself, “The sun is shining. The birds are chirping. And I love being me.” Learning to love yourself truly IS a process.

By the same token, not loving yourself and constantly finding fault with who you are is a process, too. No child wakes up saddled with low self-esteem. It’s a process that person goes through in which a countless stream of people have helped to chip away at his or her self-esteem.

In the same way that it was a process to lose your sense of self and self-love, it’s a process to build it back up. Here are a few ways you can get back on the path to caring for yourself and arrive at the grand destination of loving yourself fully.

1. Every morning, write down one thing you are proud of / like about yourself

Everyone has a morning routine. You get up. Get dressed. Brush your teeth (hopefully!). And you have breakfast. Simply adding one more item to that list each morning can go a long way towards loving yourself. Get a journal — or even a small wall calendar — and write down one thing you either like about yourself each day or one thing that you have done that you are proud of. It could be something as simple as “I’m having a good hair day” or “I got my eyeliner on straight on the first try this morning” or “I held the door open for someone.” Just find one thing you did — big or small — that you did that made you say, “Hey! I’m alright!”

At the end of your first month of doing this, if you are writing these brief blurbs on your calendar, you will have a visual record of at least 30 things you can point to as to why you should love yourself.

2. Edit Your Self-Criticism

One of the most feared and fierce women in the fashion world was — and is — Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue magazine. In fact, it was rumored that Ms. Wintour was the inspiration for Meryl Streep’s (ahem) demanding role in The Devil Wears Prada. But, while Streep’s character, high-powered fashion editor Miranda Priestly may not have been the sweetest boss in the world, she did love herself like no other.

While Prada or Hermes might not be your style (or in your budget), one thing that can be learned from this fiery fashion editor is when to edit your own self-criticism. You may not be able to control what the world thinks of you, but you can control what YOU think of yourself.

The second a negative thought or bit of self doubt begins to creep into your head, whip out your imaginary red pen and strike that from your September issue ASAP. By editing out your own self-criticism and nipping negative thoughts in the bud, you will be better able to focus on the positives.

3. Be Good

Drawing upon yet another film character, that lovable extraterrestrial from the ‘80s, E.T. said it best: “Be good.” When you are kind to others and go out of your way to do nice things for the people you love — or even total strangers — there is no way you can possibly dislike yourself. Don’t become a doormat and let others take advantage of your good nature, but surprising a friend or co-worker with a donut or cup of coffee is one small, simple way to brighten another’s day. Holding a door for an elderly person whose hands are filled with packages is another kind gesture that doesn’t take a whole lot of effort…and you should definitely be writing these random acts of kindness on your calendar each day, too!

If you have the time or a cause that resonates strongly with you, volunteer your time to help others. Whether it’s helping a kids’ softball team or reading to the elderly, or even donating canned goods or old clothes, there are a lot of small, inexpensive ways to just… be good. And if you can manage to make your finger light up like ol’ E.T., then that’s something that you can really love about yourself!

4. Have Fun

Everyone’s idea of fun is different. Some people love to go out to a club and dance. Others enjoy a spirited round of shopping with friends. And still, some people enjoy sitting on the couch with a good glass of wine and an even better book. Regardless of your particular flavor of fun, making a conscious effort to enjoy life and doing at least one thing each day (or week, if for some insane reason you feel you’re absolutely too busy to have fun) that makes your soul sing is crucial to loving your life and, in-turn, loving yourself. Setting aside just a few hours each week that you can look forward to can boost your self-esteem and serve as a well-deserved reward for the strides you’ve made on the path to self-love and self-realization.

CANCER

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and anyone who’s ever let a friend talk them into going on a blind date knows that it’s the truth. I don’t normally go on blind dates, but I let my friend Monica and her husband talk me into going on one a few months back since we’ve been friends for years. They know me pretty well. I assumed (perhaps naively) that I’d get along well with anyone they introduced me to, even if it didn’t result in anything romantic.

Unfortunately, I’d forgotten the Cardinal Rule of blind dating—NEVER let your married friends set you up on a blind date with ANYONE.

The longer someone has been in a relationship, the less they know about dating. When it comes to dating, married people have lost all perspective. They’ve forgotten what it’s like in the trenches. Worst of all, married people operate under the assumption that the goal of dating is to eventually get married which is A) a bit self-aggrandizing and B) probably not true.

While I typically adhere to my Cardinal Rule of blind dating, I made the mistake of letting Ricky and Monica talk me into going out on a date with a guy from Ricky’s work. For the purposes of this post, we’ll call this man “Mr. Tall, Dark and Entitled”—which is exactly what he was.

I’ll admit that Mr. Tall, Dark and Entitled made a good first impression. He was clean, well-dressed and handsome. I liked his smile. I was attracted to his confidence. Unfortunately, a good first impression isn’t enough. A person has to be able to back it up with substance—something that Mr. Tall, Dark and Entitled was sadly lacking.

I should have known our date would be a disaster when he suggested Mexican for dinner. Gringos are always trying to take me out to eat at Mexican restaurants. As a Latina woman, I’m not sure whether to interpret this behavior as thoughtful, racist or a little bit of both. Don’t get me wrong—I love Mexican food, but I eat it all the time. A little change of pace would have been nice.    

That being said, Mexican food for dinner on a first date is a pardonable offense. My date was handsome and charming and I would have quickly forgiven him—until I saw where it was he was taking me.  

For the record, Taco Bell does not qualify as a “Mexican” restaurant.

“What the hell is he thinking?” I asked myself, as we pulled into the parking lot. “Does he take all his dates to Taco Bell? Or just Latina women? Am I supposed to be flattered by his shallow, half-hearted attempt to engage my cultural heritage with processed bean slop and $2.00 tacos?”    

Taking me to a fast food restaurant for dinner was pretty bad, but Mr. Tall, Dark and Entitled insisted on making things worse. He spent the entire date talking to me like I just got off the plane from Puerto Rico.

For the record, gentlemen, there are certain things you shouldn’t do when you’re out on a date with me (or any other Latina woman, for that matter). Don’t compliment my English. Don’t feign solidarity with the oppressed people of whatever country you think I’m from. When I’m telling you stories about the people in my life, don’t interrupt to provide the correct pronounciation of their names. I might be a Latina with a little bit of an accent, but I’m also an American citizen with a pretty good grasp of the English language. Even if I wasn’t, I’d probably still know how to pronounce the names of my friends and family members.

Please, don’t misunderstand—it’s not that I’m angry or that I dislike Mr. Tall, Dark and Entitled. I’m sure he’s a good person with many positive attributes. But I’m not going to go on another date with him. I can’t—at least not until he realizes that Taco Bell is not an ideal first date destination. After all, a man who doesn’t know what real Mexican food tastes like probably isn’t ready to date a real Mexican.

Because healthy, successful relationships require a great deal of physical and emotional effort to maintain, breakups can cause terrible turmoil. Commonly, many immediately consider indulgent choices such as alcohol, sweets, and movies on the couch to relieve their aching hearts. However, any comfort from such unhealthy choices is ephemeral and generally ends in deeper distress. Fortunately, a healthy diet and exercise lifestyle is the perfect long-term way to spring out of the breakup blues and live a happy life.

Binging on alcohol dehydrates the body, often leading to headache and nausea, thus presenting little real emotional comfort. Similarly, excessive added sugars in sweets such as cake and ice cream cause an energetic high followed by a depressive low involving fatigue, irritability, insomnia, and more. Digestion of processed sugars also depletes the body’s supply of B vitamins and chromium, both of which boost positive mood in the brain. The sedentary activity of watching a movie is a popular activity to pair with an intake of alcohol or sweets, which further worsens mood. The absorption of excessive processed sugars in alcohol and sweets, when the body is inactive, converts to stored fat instead of energy. This can lead to poor circulation, bloat, discomfort, and further fatigue and irritability.

A healthy diet and exercise regimen is the true solution to the breakup blues, since eating well and exercising releases endorphins (i.e. awesome little hormones that elicit happiness and inner tranquillity). Experts typically advocate an exercise routine of 30 minutes per day with varied intensity levels, as muscles respond best to surprise. A combination of aerobic and toning exercises is also important, for muscles aid in the positive, energy-boosting effects of cardiovascular activity. One great activity is a long, outdoor walk with intervals of easy, moderate, and brisk paces. Vitamin D deficiency is correlated with mood disorders, so the vitamin D from the sun will boost mood along with the released endorphins. Taking a fitness class or exercising with a friend are also great ways to spend time with others, stay disciplined in an exercise routine, and keep the mind away from negativity.

Choosing healthy foods is one of the most effective ways to maintain optimal mood. Ground flax meal and salmon are two choices rich in essential Omega-3 fatty acids, which help fight depression. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale are super-foods, rich in energy-supplying B vitamins, phytochemicals such as antioxidants, and more. Phytochemicals provide plants with their colour, and the richer the colour, the more phytochemicals the food contains. Antioxidants are a type of phytochemical found in leafy greens that counteract free radicals in the body, which are associated with depression. Antioxidants may also help defend against heart disease, stroke, and cancer, providing an improved overall wellness. Antioxidants can also be found in dark chocolate, which, in moderation, can also release endorphins and serotonin, two chemicals in the body that aid in positive mood. Nuts, also in moderation, are a great source of mood-boosting selenium.  Citrus, pomegranate, berries, and all other fruits are an excellent choice as well, for they contain natural sugar that converts to energy in the body.

Indeed, with a healthy lifestyle of eating wisely and exercising regularly, anyone can defeat a traumatic breakup and bounce back into their original, happy selves.

The New York Times recently shed light on how a bad credit score has become non-negotiable grounds for dumping or zero second dates among singles in the dating landscape.

Founder and CEO of MoneyZen Wealth Management, Manisha Thakor, told the Times that credit scores have actually become synonymous with sexually transmitted diseases. Typically starting in your mid-to-late 20s, the stakes are higher for singles who are dating. The future success of a relationship is determined by more than just physical attraction, a sense of humor and a fun-loving personality. Men and women are looking for partnerships with someone who shares the same vision for the future, whether it’s a life of adventure or financial stability.

Credit Cards…or Dating Cards?

Who would have thought those little pieces of plastic could seriously limit your dating potential? Sure, we’re cautious with our credit cards because we want the best identity theft protection and secure credit now, but should singles have to pay in their love lives because of a history of bad credit? David Wong’s contentious article asks, “what do you offer?” under his statement that “what you produce does not have to make money, but it does have to benefit people.” In this case, “people” are dates, partners and potential husbands or wives. It’s what you don’t offer that benefits people, which is a history of poor credit and bad debt. It sounds materialistic and petty, but it matters.

Credit Makeover

If you do have a dark financial history, you’re not doomed to be lonely for the rest of your life. Give yourself a wakeup call and take action. Do you know your credit score? Find out. Do you spend extravagantly and outside your means? Stop. Do you have horrible credit? Create a plan of action to tackle it. Are you dating someone with whom you see a potential future? PISCES
