Do’s and Don’ts of Fall Dating Fashion

What to Wear When There’s a Chill in the Air

By Molly Sorohan

On a first date, a girl should dress to impress… not to intimidate. Buying a new outfit can make a girl feel more confident on a first date, but watch out!  Fashion risks often lead to fashion wrecks.   As a New York City shopping tour guide, I frequently get the inside scoop directly from the designer source.

Here are some fall fashion trends that could make (or break) your date:

1.  Do:  The Trench Coat.  The trench coat is the rare item that is both extremely sexy and extremely practical.  At the moment, it’s also extremely fashionable.  He’ll be dying to know what’s underneath from the moment you walk through the door.   For maximum effect, pair this one with a low-cut top and bare legs.  Find an excuse to keep it on just a little bit longer than necessary  so that his mind has the chance to wander…

2. Don’t:  The Harem Pant.  Not on the first date anyway.  While these silk harem pants by Adam are both comfy and fashion-forward, you don’t want him thinking of harems on the first date.  You want him thinking of spending time with just you.  So hold off on these till the third or fourth date, then pair them with a girly tank and light sweater for a head-turning combo.

3.  Do:  Glitter  Remember when you were ten years old and glitter lip gloss was the height of glamour?  Well, glitter has hit the runways big time this season, returning to the lids, lips and fingers of fashionistas everywhere.  At Fashion Week last February, even Adam Lambert sang the praises of glitter.  “Glitter is very important,” he explained. “It just catches light. And in a literal sense that’s lovely and it’s visually pleasing but maybe it’s a little bit more than that. Maybe if you’re catching light, it’s an energy thing.”So go ahead, indulge your inner ten year old with that tube of glittering Mac Lip Glass.  Catch the light of the guy you’ve set your heart on.

4.  Don’t:  The Leather Shorts.  You may live somewhere in America where you’re lucky  enough to miss this fashion trend.  However, if you live in a major metropolitan area and see would-be models attempting  this look, avoid it. While some trends last that are both unflattering (skinny jeans) and uncomfortable (stripper heels), leather shorts manage to be unflattering, uncomfortable and expensive.  So while Rihanna can rock them and the runways can showcase them, we feel fairly certain that your average person can sit this one out.  If you do feel tempted to spend money on them, don’t wear them on a date.  To a straight guy, you will look ridiculous.

5.  Do:  The Onesie. From a cutes y plaid romper to the suave pants suit, something about this garment turns men on.  Possibly the romper brings out his inner Lolita fantasy.  Maybe it’s the simplicity of removing one thing  and voila!  Nudity!  For whatever reason, this fashion-forward item hits the mark in terms of cuteness, comfort and sexiness.  Pick up this Jimmy Choo for H&M jumpsuit for an affordable, sexy look this fall.
